Once you’ve found some people you like, you need to think about how you’re going to be most comfortable interacting with them. The features on offer vary vastly between dating sites, so it pays to make sure they support what you want.

The most basic of all these features is the simple email. This might not mean email gets sent straight to your normal email account, but rather that you will get your own dedicated “mail box” on the site you’re using. When you want to contact another user, or another user wants to contact you, the messages will get sent to and from this mail box. All sites support this basic feature.

The second most common feature, and probably also the most popular, is the classic online chat rooms. These often form the main hub of a dating site’s community. They’re great for chilling out and getting to know people. Most of them also support private chat rooms where you can chat directly to someone without anyone else seeing.

Dating sites are increasingly making use of modern technology to make their services more interactive. These can be great fun to use! Even if you don’t think you’ll use these to start off with, you should seriously consider selecting a site that supports them, as I would place money on you wanting to use them in the future after you’ve met a few people that you really get along with!

The first of these features is voice communication. People participating will normally have a microphone plugged in to their computer. However, you can often listen in anyway even if you don’t have one. It can be quite surprising to finally hear what someone really sounds like. To top things off, it’s a lot cheaper than a phone call!

More and more people are buying web cams and websites are increasingly providing support them. Again, even if you don’t have one, I would recommend looking for sites that support them. It also provides some re-assurance that the site owners are taking an interest in their users and constantly working to improve their user experiences. Besides that, they’re also great fun!

Chances are you’ll own a mobile phone. It might interest you to know that some sites provide mobile phone access. This can be in two forms. You may be able to surf the “mobile” version of their dating site which will allow you to check your mail box if you’re not at home. Sometimes the dating site will act as a text message forwarding service allowing you to send and receive text messages to other users without having to give out your mobile phone number. However, this isn’t too common at present and will likely be something that is increasingly supported in the future.

So, to recap, the main features to consider are: mail, chat, voice, video or web cams and mobile access. Basically, the more the better!
